This year's Vanity Fair Hollywood 2016 cover has finally arrived and it includes thirteen of the most in-demand and legendary women of Tinsel Town right now. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, the cover features all women from different demographics and generations demonstrating that you do not have to be young and fresh out of acting school to be taking over Hollywood in the 21st century. Unknowingly when the photograph was shot in October, the editors of the magazine had chosen to feature five of the Best Actress nominees for the upcoming Oscars on the 28th February such as Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Brie Larson, and Charlotte Rampling proving that it is not only the academy who are celebrating these women as creative genius', but the media is to. The nominated actresses also feature alongside the legendary Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren, Viola Davis, Diane Keaton, Alicia Vikander, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and the already Oscar winners, Rachel Weisz and Lupita Nyong’o. Although the cover is enough to purchase the magazine alone, inside, Vanity Fair have included individual portrait size images of each actress and a homage to their careers, written by James Wolcott.
As for the clothing, the shoot was styled by Jessica Diehl, who has created a glorified vision of black sequins, tailoring and leather silhouettes for a majestic minimalistic look. Regardless of the simple fashion attire the actresses have been presented in, these women are making a bigger statement in the creative industry by themselves without having the wear some of the biggest designer couture's going. Diana Keaton even wore an authentic outfit of her own for the shoot to really translate her fabulous identity onto the pages of the magazine alongside the other twelve starlets.
Personally, my favourite icons from the shoot were Lupita Nyong'o and Alicia Vikander (who also got my vote for the best dressed at the SAG's if you saw my previous post!) Lupita has been one of my favourite actresses for a while now after watching her first performance in 'Eight Years a Slave' and she never disappoints with her amazing on trend gowns that she has been known to debut during the award season. Furthermore, as for Alicia Vikander, not only do I love her glamorous style and think she is such an inspiring actress, her performance in the current film, 'The Danish Girl' studies such an intense and ground-breaking subject for a new actress. However, as actors Vikander and Eddie Redmayne present the story with such grace and beauty to retrospectively communicate the lives of the artists Greda and Einar Wegener in Copenhagen during the 1920's. (I plan to talk about this film in one of my next posts as I have just recently watched it.)
Overall, every single actress earned their place within the photo due to their extraordinary talents which gains them the title of one of Hollywood's icons for 2016.
