The annual Met Gala has returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art once again this year in New York and it seems that as always this is the one event that has us anticipating to see what the likes of Beyoncé, Kim K and Taylor Swift all show up wearing due to the different themes that take over each event, leaving our favourite celebrities searching for the most stylish approach to a costume they can.
Firstly before I even get onto the fashion of the night, I wanted to just talk about the importance of this star studded event because unlike the Grammy's, the Oscars or the Golden Globes, this is one night which ensures a fulfilment of imagination, fantasy and fundraising in awe of the spectacular costume institute which is located within the Anna Wintour Costume Centre within the creative venue. Furthermore, as always the glamorous yet a little wacky event is hosted by the publication that Wintour currently edits proudly, Vogue which intends to celebrate the opening of the Met Museum's fashion exhibition for 2016.
As for the theme of this years Met Gala following on from last years 'China: Through the Looking Glass' motif, in awe of the 21st century obsession with mixing fashion with digital gadgets and the science of mechanical and industrial arts, the night was exposed to a theme of 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology'. Sounds a bit too 'Blade Runner' meets modern day Star Wars if you ask me but as ever the night was filled with new fashion innovations, unbelievable responses to the theme of technology and of course as expected at a fashion related event, the good, the bad and the ugly!
So lets have a look into what our favourite fashion icon and celebrities were wearing last night in the upper East side of Manhattan. I will start with my favourite most fitting to the theme looks of the starry night then sadly go ono the bad then the ugly...
The Good
So appropriately for the futuristic focus night, we saw the likes of Lady Gaga who was wearing a computer-circuit-board bodice (typical Gaga), Katy Perry's supporting Tamagotchi accessory, Kate Hudson's daring garment filled with shards of flexiglass and Zayn Malik's armoured sleeve for a metallic majestic night.
ZAYN and Gigi Hahid entering the Met Gala on the night of the ball
Although this might not be everyone's favourite from the night, there is something about this Valentino dress worn by Rachel McAdams that I cant help but love. This golden dream of a look was a full fashion experience covered in glamorous sequins and what seemed to be handwriting which in a genius way, covered the fact that this dress was actually sheer.
If there is one star that completely blew the guests of the Gala away last night and had possibly every social media and online magazine discussing her latest gown, it was definitely Claire Danes. At first when Danes approached the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum, spectators could only presume that Danes had opted for a modern day Cinderella inspired ball gown designed by Zac Posen which was coloured in with a powdery ice cold blue hue. However, once the American actress walked inside of the museum, the real extravaganza of the night was revealed as Danes stood in complete darkness and allowed her dress to light up the room with electrifying fibre optics and ultimately up stage every other celebrities look on the night. The whimsical Posen gown was one-of-a-kind and was a hand-sewn creation crafted from organza so as we can all imagine this dress must have taken so much time and effort to create!
Obviously Danes wins the award of the night for the most spectacularly dressed, but there was one other look which I would class as possibly my favourite and this was worn by Poppy Delevingne. On the evening, Delevingne wore a silver heavily embellished tiered gown with what appeared to have had a rather risky low plunge at the front. The Marchesa dress spoke a thousand words with its symbolism of 1920's luxury flapper and old Hollywood glamour which worked harmoniously with Delevingne's sartorial super model identity. These two themes weren't the only ones being connoted through the model's outfit because she also finished off her seductive, metallic look with dark vamp lips and bleach blonde hair for an edgy porcelain perfected look.
The Bad

The Bad
It pains me to even make this comment because I thought it would never come to this but Beyoncé has regrettably joined my list of the Bad from the Met Gala. Maybe there is just too much PV fabric or maybe it is the ironic bold nude colour of the dress against her flawless (sorry for the 2013 album reference) bronzed skin. I am really undecided about this look as I felt that Beyoncé really needed that pop of colour in her choice for the night to especially steer away from looking remotely similar to her extremely revealing 2015 nude embellished garment. One aspect of the garment that I will credit both Beyoncé and Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy's Haute Couture designer, is that as ever the singer is wearing something which completely raises attention to her insane silhouette and reveals her curves perfectly whilst showing flesh metaphorically with this 'second skin' sort of gown..
Although it fits with the theme of the night, there is something about this look which just says 'Courtney Love kidnapped Gaga and took over her 'Born this Way' video. Obviously I am aware that Gaga's style can be out of this world and eccentric which in terms of the theme seems to fit the brief. However, this time I thought it just seemed a little too familiar and something which retrospectively took us back to 2011 when the artist was at her highest when it came to wacky costumes. Therefore, this caused her look to appear too repetitive and not as imaginative as we would have expected. Furthermore, the outfit did not speak glamorous event at all to me and instead, made Gaga look like the new reformed Taylor Swift's older sister trying to look cool. (You will see what I mean in just a few more looks.) This time round it was certainly a no for Gaga from me.
If there is one thing for sure, Selena Gomez committed a crime against fashion on the night of the Gala so much that I would be shocked if the Fashion Police did not have something to say about this look and take her into garment custody. Firstly, I want to start with the polka dot floating dress which has been oddly layered with a thick leather bralet. Maybe this may have not looked as bad if the dress had not been polka dots but even still the pattern is less than fitting for a night filled with some of the biggest stars around adorning themselves with beautiful iridescent garments covered in futuristic embroidery and powerful platinum materials. Then to make this already weird mashup of pattern and textures even worse, Gomez opted for a pair of platform lace up monochrome boots. Obviously I understand they match the black and white palette of the dress and bag but really? Were these shoes that necessary for the Met Gala when Beyoncé is wearing 100 carats of Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
The Ugly
I hate to shame her because her music is my ultimate guilty pleasure but really, what was Taylor Sift thinking with this outrageous combination garment and styling which were beyond out of character for the American pop singer-songwriter. I feel this look can be related in more ways than others to a frustrated teen trying to break the barriers in fashion and form their own expressive identity but in Swift's case the bleach blonde hair, heavy makeup and metallic cut out ruffled dress just screamed out 'rebellious Jenny Humphry' from Gossip Girl a bit too loudly. As an observer of the fashion industry I can certain say I was not a fan of this bizarre look and Swift should definitely return back to her natural pretty yet on trend look that she wore with such self-assurance and presence.
