Task 3: Your Communication: Contextual analysis and concept

A new direction for the snake skin print trend.

Denotation of Snake Skin print: exotic, safari, nature, desert, poisonous, wildlife, tropical, heat, jungle, slimy, curvy, poisonous, deathly

Alternative use Idea 1:

As for my own alternative use for the trend of Snake Skin Print, I have chosen to take the reptile print and use it in a window display for Salvatore Farragamo SS 15 collection, whilst adopting an Egyptian theme of Cleopatra who historically, was bit by a snake (An Asp) in 30 BC.

Product to place: window display/ visual merchandising

As for the interior and architecture of the display, I have taken inspiration from Christian Louboutin’s Fall 2013 window display and artefacts from the 'Ancient Egypt Transformed' exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to depict an Egyptian architecture for the backdrop of the window display.

Narrative: Egypt during Cleopatra's reign and death

Brand: Salvatore Ferragamo SS 15 Collection. I chose this collection because many of the silhouettes used within the collection replicate the colours of Egyptian clothing or styles and they also include the snake skin print. The colour scheme also depicts exoticness, warmth, heat and desert which I thought would be a perfect fit for my narrative. Furthermore, the sleek silhouette of dresses resemble the curves and body of a snake.

The window display will include mannequins collection however, to include the snake skin print, the models will be presented with ceramic snakes wrapped around their bodies to symbolise Cleopatra's death by the bite of an asp snake and the historical use of the accessory of the snake that signified social class throughout Ancient Egypt. This was because " women (were) believed to have worn live snakes around their necks” as a fashion conscious statement to show that they were from the upper class during the period before Christ (BC) in Ancient Egypt.

The prints used by Ferragamo will be displayed on the surface of the ceramic snake to create a more realistic and creative commodity of the print.
