Eugenia Loli's Collages

As a child growing up in Athens, Greece, Eugenia Loli's life was not directed towards becoming a surrealist artist but instead, a career in I.T after her studies. A subject she was forced into in a bid for the approval of her parents and lack of artist opportunities in her home country. However, fast forwarding a few years later, Loli began to combine her understanding of graphics, the web and digital software with her artistic flow and creative skills, a talent she had always been better at than the other school kids, to follow her passion for art and one that allowed her to develop contemporary psychedelic approaches to artwork.

Sourced from old ripped out magazine pages and vintage imagery, Loli's abstract work may come across as satirical or seen as canvases that display sarcastic pop art that mocks human affairs or real life experiences in an obscure format. However, she reassures in her recent interview with I-D magazine that she also wanted to establish work that people can identify with and relate to within their own lives but without the negative connotations that follow stereotypical paintings based on heartache and day to day traumas. In her work she also touches on themes of politics and materialism to further her dramatic narrative.

However, similarly to other growing artists in today's fast paced industry, she also admits in her interview with the cultural fashion magazine that to continue with her meta-psychedelic style of art she must begin to neglect many human influences that her work has previously been based on and start to focus solely on the science fictional themes she has dominantly displayed to narrow her work down to being completely abstract in hope that her work will communicate nothing but the obvious aesthetics on the canvas.

Personally, I am a huge fan of Loli's work as she creates pieces that subject a visual contrast between  fantasy and reality as if each piece acts as an escape away from the cultural crisis' within society.

However as an artist, I would like to see her carry on with this spiritual, dream like narrative as I am still a fan of her strong use of abstract and think it will bring more imagination and creativity to her work.

Alongside paintings, Loli also creates products such as laptop sleeves, wall tapestries, tote bags, IPhone cases and bed interiors that are all designed to include her iconic art pieces.
