For this week's fashion week favourite, as promised, I wanted to talk about Gucci's Spring Summer Ready to Wear 2016 collection. Not only because this collection was the introduction to a spectacular new brand image but also because Gucci is my favourite brand of all. From perfumes, to clothing and accessories, it is a brand to me that never disappoints!
Gucci's ready to wear extravaganza hit Milan by storm like no other collection as Alessandro Michele revealed his revolutionary designs to the world. In terms of Italian fashion, his viewers welcomed in the new and said goodbye to the once sleek and sophisticated image of Gucci, seen through the eyes of creative director Frida Giannini in 2014 and said hello to a new wave of vintage geek yet contemporary feminine fashion. However, this was not your typical vintage fashion but instead an 'illusion far from nostalgia' as Alessandro Michele confessed himself. Although he states this so confidently there is still something so retro about this collection and one thing that we certainly see, is the never ending trend and obsession with seventies influenced fashion. This may be a recycled trend but Michele uses the runway as his playground and creates a unique of version of the look to offer a fresh quirky spin to the trend. Furthermore, Michele, who was born in the seventies, contextually communicates a narrative based on his own perspective of the era and things he grew up watching in terms of the political, social and economic situation at the time. His narrative subjects a vision of a women, contextually based on his mother in the seventies, rebelling against her expected role of being a stay at home housewife and instead, venturing out into the world of work to achieve her own career and fulfil her aspirations. He translates this image into his collection however, he makes it contemporary and modern by using rich textual fabrics, tailored suits and a strong use of pattern to also communicate the idea that affluence, independency and status has grown in society since the seventies. Especially for women.
Visuals decorated with glitter, beautiful complex colours, flower embroideries, space vs. geek accessories and risky floral patterns glided down the runway with personality and emotion stunning the likes of Alexa Chung and Dakota Johnson who graced the front row of the show. Noticeably, majority of the front row came in support of Alessandro Michele by wearing iconic Gucci garments from his latest collections. Although colour was definitely part of Alessandro's message, I couldn't help but notice the intense yet playful use of insect and reptile illustrations paired with geometric prints worn by his guests and models to channel an exotic evening filled with vibrancy and fun. Even though this regeneration of fashion was certainly a risky one, we can only look forward to seeing what eccentric designs Michele has in store for Gucci's Fall 2016 collection.

Besides taking over the runway in Milan, Michele's collections have been frequently used by stylists in various fashion magazines this Autumn/Winter season such as Tank, AnOther magazine and Wonderland.
