First it was Pharrell Williams with 'Girl' now it's Grace Coddlington's turn to take over Comme De Garcon's fragrance house with her new collaborative scent called 'Grace'. Known for her legendary work at American Vogue and within the world of modelling, it seems surprising that someone of Coddington's status and power had not made a fragrance before now. However, instead of creating something elegant and serious like we would expect from the fashionista to reflect her role within the industry, Coddlington has channelled a vision for a perfume that is entirely true to herself and a little quirky and kitschy at the same time!
The feel and look of the perfume is a complete representative of Grace Coddlington and is an olfactory touchstone of every scent that has meant something to her during her life and her career which spans across nearly six decades. One ingredient which mainly inspired Coddlington's scent was the smell of roses which transports the model back to her mother's garden where she played as a child and one of her most favourite Floris perfumes, Red Rose which she wore during her very early days of modelling.
“My mother had a rose garden, and it just never occurred to me to smell like any other smell except rose”
As for the bottle, which was designed by the art director and editorial director of Interview, Fabien Baron, Coddlington requested that the flacon should replicate a vision of her favourite feline but in a vintage decorative way to define her engagement with the industry for a long time and the nostalgia of her childhood. Baron was even found to have taken inspiration from one of Grace Coddlington's sketches of a cat to provide himself with a stronger vision of what the creative director of American Vogue wanted her bottle to look like.
But really why cats? Coddlington answered this question so simply in an interview with The New York Times recently as she stated, “I’m obsessed with a cat, to a boring degree.” Therefore although I does not seem too high fashion and instead, kind of a similar design to Katy Perry's PRRR Perfume, Coddlington ensured that all aspects of the fragrance would represent something that she was passionate about.
In terms of some of the scents which influenced Coddlington's creation, her main inspirations were Calvin Klein Original, Chanel No.19 and Hermes Rose because they were all scents that she had come across during her professional career. As for the perfume itself, the scent consists of a bed of peach blossom, white musk, and amber crystal–spiked Moroccan rose to really depict an delicate and young girl blooming into a powerful, independent fiery woman to reflect Coddlington's extraordinary journey to the top in fashion.
The perfume is set to hit the world of fragrance on the 19th April of this year so keep your eyes pealed within the next week! .I cant wait to try it!
